Cambridge Family Events (the “App”)
Last updated: 28th October 2026
Data controller: Andreas Waeber — contact: granta-admin@proton.me
This policy explains what information the App handles, why, and your choices. Cambridge Family Events is a
free mobile app that helps people find family-friendly events in and around Cambridge. It is intended for
adults (18+) — typically parents and carers planning activities — and is not directed to children.
Summary
- We do not ask you to create an account, and we do not collect your name, email address, or precise location.
- We keep no per-device or per-user record. The App does not send any device identifier, and our backend does not store a profile of you or your activity.
- Your bookmark list and settings stay on your device. When you save (bookmark) or share an event, the App updates an anonymous per-event popularity counter on our backend (adding when you save or share, and subtracting when you remove a saved event). Only the event’s identifier is used for this — no personal data.
- We may share anonymous, aggregate popularity metrics (such as how many people saved or shared an event) with event organisers and public bodies, for example councils, to help them improve local events. These contain no personal or device-identifying information.
- The App shows ads via Google AdMob. We request non-personalised ads and do not use behavioural tracking.
- We do not sell your personal data.
Information the App handles
| Data | Purpose | Where it goes |
| IP address and standard request details (time, requested URL, app/user-agent) |
Seen automatically when your device contacts our backend. Used transiently by our content-delivery network (Cloudflare) for security and rate limiting, and recorded in standard server logs for security and reliability. We do not use it to build a profile or to track you across other apps or websites. |
Cloudflare (CDN) and our backend (Google Cloud) |
| Event views and searches/filters you perform |
Requested from our backend so the App can show you events. We do not build a profile from these requests. |
Our backend |
| Aggregate “save” and “share” counts (the identifier of the saved or shared event only) |
When you save or share an event, the App updates an anonymous popularity counter for that event (removing a saved event lowers it again). The backend stores only a per-event total, not a record of what any device saved. We may share these aggregate counts with event organisers (see below). |
Our backend |
| Your bookmark list and app settings (e.g. font size) |
To remember your saved events and preferences. |
Stored only on your device |
| Advertising identifiers and related data used by Google AdMob |
To serve ads (see “Advertising” below). |

Advertising
The App displays ads supplied by Google AdMob. To keep ads relevant without tracking you, the
App requests non-personalised ads and provides only general, non-personal context keywords
(for example, “family” or “things to do”). Non-personalised ads still use limited
information, such as an advertising identifier and general (coarse) location, to combat fraud and abuse and to
perform frequency capping and aggregate reporting.
Where required (for example, for users in the UK, EEA and Switzerland), the App presents Google’s consent
prompt on startup before requesting ads. Google may act as a data controller for the data it processes for
advertising. For details of how Google uses this data, see
How Google uses information from sites or apps that use its services
and Google’s Privacy Policy.
How we use information
- To operate the App and show you events.
- To keep the service reliable and prevent abuse (rate limiting is performed at the CDN edge by IP address; we keep no per-device counts).
- To maintain anonymous, aggregate metrics such as how often an event is saved or shared.
- To share those anonymous, aggregate popularity metrics with event organisers and public bodies (for example councils) so they can tailor and improve local events. This is a free service and involves no personal or device-identifying data.
- To display ads that help cover the cost of running the App.
Legal bases (UK GDPR / EU GDPR)
- Legitimate interests — operating the service, preventing abuse, and keeping anonymous aggregate metrics.
- Consent — for advertising where consent is required, collected via Google’s consent prompt. You can change your choice as described below.
Sharing and third parties
- Google AdMob — for advertising, as described above.
- Google Cloud — our backend is hosted on Google Cloud (primary region: Europe/London). Data may be processed on Google’s infrastructure.
- Cloudflare — our content-delivery network, which sees request metadata (including IP address) to deliver traffic securely and apply rate limiting.
- Event organisers and public bodies (e.g. councils): we may share anonymous, aggregate popularity metrics (such as counts of how many people saved or shared an event). These are aggregated across users, contain no personal or device-identifying information, and cannot be used to identify you.
- We do not sell your personal data or share it for others’ independent marketing. Aggregate metrics we share are anonymous and cannot identify you.
Data retention
We keep no per-device or per-user record. Standard server and CDN logs (including IP address and request
details) are retained only for a limited period for security and reliability, then deleted. Bookmarks and
settings remain on your device until you delete them, clear the App’s data, or uninstall the App. Data
held by Google for advertising is governed by Google’s own retention policies.
Your choices and rights
- Clear local data: clearing the App’s storage or uninstalling the App removes your on-device data (bookmarks and settings). We hold no per-device record to reset.
- Ads consent: where a consent prompt is shown, you may decline or change your choice; you can also limit ad personalisation in your device’s advertising settings.
- UK/EU GDPR rights: you have rights of access, rectification, erasure, restriction, and objection. Because we do not hold account or contact information, we may be unable to identify data relating specifically to you; contact us and we will help where we can.
Children
The App is intended for adults (18+) and is not directed to children. We do not knowingly collect personal
information from children.
Security
Requests between the App and our backend use encrypted connections (HTTPS).
International transfers
Our backend is hosted in the UK/EU (Google Cloud, Europe/London). Google’s advertising and infrastructure
services may process data in other countries under safeguards described in Google’s privacy documentation.
Changes to this policy
We may update this policy from time to time. Material changes will be reflected by updating the “Last
updated” date above.
